Make your own peanut butter cupsand s’mores cups, and fluffernutter cups. I’ve been wanting to do this for ages, and man…am I glad I did. It’s easy, kind of messy, and tons of fun.

Warning: Gratuitous candy photography ahead. I couldn’t help myself. I think my camera might still be semi-coated in chocolate.

How to make homemade, filled chocolate candies

These were such a hit with the Mouse House Crew that I’ll definitely make them again soon. The best part? Once you get the basic chocolate shell down, the possibilities for fillings are almost endless.

Chocolate-coated shells

This time, I filled some of mine with a sweetened peanut-butter paste, and some with marshmallow fluff and graham crackers for an all-in-one s’mores treat. Oh, and a handful got peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, in classic fluffernutter style.

S’mores cup

Here are a few more ideas for fillings

+Chocolate ice cream + a dollop of homemade fudge sauce (fill and freeze, then thaw in the fridge half an hour before serving)
+Peanut butter + jelly
+Marshmallow fluff + raspberry jam
+Dark chocolate fudge + chopped, brandy-soaked dried cherries

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: A note on ingredients

I used semi-sweet chocolate chips here, but use any kind of chocolate you like. Dark chocolate would be lovely, as well. For the peanut butter, I used smooth, but chunky (or even homemade) would be great.

For the marshmallow fluff, make your own (it’s easy, I swear!)or use good ole Marshmallow Fluff in a jar.

(Fact #438 about The Hungry Mouse: The Mouse House is located not far from where Marshmallow Fluff was invented.)

Melting chocolate: To temper or not to temper?

In a word, I didn’t bother for these. Basically, tempering chocolate is a method of melting chocolate that helps it keep a nice gloss and a good snap.

If you like, definitely take the time to do this. It’s a good thing to do if you plan to keep them around for a while, and can help eliminate (harmless) spots of bloom on the surface.

Here’s a good explanation from Epicurious:

OK, Mouse! Make with the candy!

Yep, yep. Here you go. There are all sorts of recipes floating around out there for these. Here’s a step-by-step walk-through of how I made mine. Measurements are approximate, and depend on how much of each ingredient you add to each cup.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups

For the candy shells
3-4 cups chocolate chips

For the peanut butter filling
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract

For the s’mores filling
1 cup marshmallow fluff
2 graham crackers, broken in pieces

Yields about 2 dozen mini peanut butter cups and 4-6 large s’mores.

I used mini muffin liners for the peanut-butter cups, and regular-sized ones for the s’mores.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Melt the chocolate

Grab your chocolate chips. Set a pot with an inch of water on the stove over high heat. Bring the water up to a boil, then drop the heat to low. Set a large, heat-proof bowl on top of the pot.

Add your chocolate to the bowl. It should immediately start to melt.

Stir it with a spatula until it’s completely melted. This should only take a few minutes. When it’s totally melted, turn the stove off and set the bowl on a board to cool.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Make the peanut butter filling

While your chocolate is cooling, make your peanut butter filling.

Put your peanut butter in a medium-sized bowl.

Add the powdered sugar to it.

Stir to combine well.

When you have a smooth, uniform mixture, add the vanilla extract. (If you wanted a different flavor in the filling, this is the place to add it.)

Stir to combine well. You want to end up with a smooth paste, like this:

Set the peanut butter filling aside. If you’re using additional fillings, gather them together now.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Make the chocolate cups

When your chocolate is still melted, but cool enough to handle comfortably, you’re ready to make your chocolate-coated cups.

Grab your muffin liners.

Put a spoonful of chocolate in the middle of the cup.

Using the back of your spoon, smoosh the chocolate around so that it completely coats the inside of the muffin liner, like this:

When your cup is coated, set it aside on a baking sheet or plate (use something that will fit in your fridge).

Repeat with the rest of the muffin liners until they’re all coated.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Chill the chocolate cups

When your cups are all filled, pop them into the fridge for about a half an hour, until the chocolate is totally solid. When you’re ready to fill them, take them out of the fridge.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Fill the peanut-butter cups

Check your melted chocolate before you start. If it’s too solid to work with, pop it back over a pot of warm water to loosen it up a little.

Put a small lump of peanut butter filling in the chocolate cup. How much you add is up to you. I’d fill them at least halfway up, so there’s a fairly even ratio of chocolate to filling.

With a finger, smoosh the filling down so that it’s flat.

Top with a spoonful of melted chocolate.

Spread the chocolate around with the back of your spoon. Basically, you want to create a chocolate seal, touching all the edges and completely covering the filling.

Set the finished peanut butter cup on a plate or tray (again, one that will fit in your fridge).

Repeat with the rest of the chocolate-coated cups.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Fill the s’mores cups

To make a s’mores cup, fill the bottom of the cup a little more than halfway full with marshmallow fluff. Set a piece of a graham cracker on top of the fluff. Press it down gently.

Top with melted chocolate.

Spread the chocolate around with the back of a spoon to completely seal in the filling.

Set aside on a plate or tray. Repeat as needed.

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Refrigerate the candy

When all your cups are filled and topped with chocolate, pop your candy into the fridge to let the chocolate harden up. Give them an hour, at least, depending on how thick your top layer of chocolate is.

When the chocolate is hard, they should look about like this:

Homemade Peanut Butter & S’mores Cups: Serve and enjoy!

Here’s a peanut butter cup:

And here’s a s’mores cup:

Enjoy!

  1. Holy Bejesus! Those are some fantastic photos!!! Uhm, let me know if you need some help eating those (I'd be willing to help out with everything other than peanut butter ones) :)
  2. I can just imagine the fun (and associated sugar rush!) you must have had in preparing this post! I think I may need to start making these as gifts for folks (which, of course, will mean sampling for me :-)).
    • Thanks so much for stopping by! They were totally a blast to make. Oh, and I think it's one of the rules of candymaking that you need to sample a lot when you make gifts. ;) +Jessie
  3. I definitely want to try making these, they look like a lot of fun to make! I am such a huge fan of peanut butter cups too. I like that there are different filling options as well.
      • I have been making these for years and often given them as teacher gifts! My kids can't get enough of them. A few really good combos are dark chocolate rasberry with a dash of chambord, or fluff with Nutella and dark chocolate shell. OOOHHHH soooooo good!
    • Hehe, you beat me to it! I was going to e-mail you tomorrow and squeak about this. :D Thanks so much! Peanut butter expert that you are, I can't wait to see what you do with them. +Jessie
  4. Oh, my, my, my, my, my! That shot of the open S'mores cup made me drool, all over my keyboard! Thanks so much for sharing! I can't wait to have a little time to make these. :)
  5. holy sh&&. HOLY SH!!. i'm so sorry but this post makes me want to curse i want it so bad. this may be my "last meal" dessert. just when i thought the pictures couldn't get better, there was they money shot - the one of the insides. FLUFF? are you kidding me - genius! peanut butter and chocolate must be the best combination in the history of food. to me, at least.
    • Hmmm, OK. I haven't done that in a long time. I just looked, and I don't have any marshmallows in the house, or I'd give it a shot for you. That said, I think I'd melt them in the top of a double boiler with a tiny bit of butter. (But not too much...you don't want it to get greasy.) If you give it a try, I'd do it with a small amount, since I can't tell you for sure if it will work. (Let me know?) Good luck! +Jessie
  6. Dang, I think I just put on at least 20lbs staring at these...Now, where do I place the order for some? **don't want to make it myself, I may end up eating it all by myself and really putting on 20lbs!** ~Foong~
  7. made these, they were great! made both peanut butter and smores one with medium sized cups. would make peanut butter one next time w/ small cup b/c too much chocolate and peanut butter in one sitting (it's filling!) really good and easy, love!
  8. HOLY CRAPOLA!!! S'MORES CUPS!!! Why have I never thought of that before?? I MUST have my mommy send me some graham crackers so I can make those!! My English hubby would love LOVE LOVE them (and you just KNOW I will!!) In the mean time, I'll have to be having a go at those PB cups! Need to head to Aldi's for real American PB!! Thanks for sharing a lip-smacking post with drool-inducing photos!!!
  9. Hey, I'm so glad that I found this I had a ton of peanutbutter and no one wanted it. It's a little messy when I did the first batch. But you should have seen it after I let my 4 kids give it a try (oldest is 8 and youngest is 3), I'm glad that I had cleaned everything before they started because they licked most of their mess up. It was sooo funny, but it was really cool to see them working together. We are going to try carmel next, hope it turns out as good as the peanutbutter cups. Thanks for putting this out. Jenifer
  10. I always add some graham cracker crumbs and a tad of butter to the peanut butter so it doesn't get to thick and I feel it makes them like 10x better.
  11. I made these using soy nut butter and dairy free chocolate chips for my 7-yr old daughter, who is peanut, dairy and gluten allergic. She'd never had a peanut butter cup before. She's a pretty happy camper with these. Got to make the smores ones with gluten-free graham crackers (smoreables). Thanks for posting this! Mike Petronio Poughkeepsie NY
  12. I made these last night! I would def temper the chocolate, I did not and they get soft (not totally melted) at room temp. I made them as a gift for my bosses birthday. Thanks so much this is the second thing I have made from your web site, and plan many many more :)
  13. {SPEECHLESS}......{DROOL}......Can we just say I understand now why they call it food porn! Can't wait to try these. Nobody does tutorials better than you!
  14. How is the taste of the peanut butter? I like peanut butter to have a little bit of a salty taste when combining it with chocolate for the contrast. I may have to do a little bit of playing around in the kitchen this weekend to see how it works with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
    • The peanut butter mixture is sweet, but not too, too sweet. Of course, it really depends on your palate. If you like yours on the saltier side, I'd definitely use a salted peanut butter. You could even try adding a little of that gray sea salt that goes so well with sweet things. Let me know how it goes! +Jessie
  15. I loved these but found them too sweet for my post-partum palate. For the peanut butter mixture I added flour and salt to taste, with just a bit of sugar. Mmmm thank you for this life-saving recipe.
  16. I just made these as a hostess gift for a friend throwing a Halloween party... they are AWESOME! Thank you so much for a delicious & fun recipe, as well as for the gorgeous photos.
  17. These look SO great! I made an almond butter version of them a couple months ago and blogged about it. But I didn't really know what I was doing, so I'm going to do them again w/ your recipe! http://evolutioncatering.blogspot.com/2009/10/primal-chocolate-almond-butter-cup.html
  18. I made the peanut butter cups and they were a hit! Sooooooo GOOD! I am making the marshmallow cups now with crushed up candy cane mixed in the fluff and a sprinkle of candy cane on top. I'm making them to give away, but I'll have to make extra, for me!
    • wow! what a great idea to add in the candy canes!! I would love to know how they turned out and how they were recieved by your taste testers. I might like to make these if they were a hit for you!
  19. Yesterday I decided I wanted to find a peanut butter cup recipe. I searched high and low but none really did the trick for me... they just didn't seem quite right for one reason or another. Your recipe and picture how to totally pulled me in. Made these today and oh WOW freaking delicious! Simply amazing.
  20. OH MY GOSH! YUM! I LOVE reeses. I just made a reese cupcake for my baking blog. I am most definitely going to make these smore ones too! they look soo good! http://cuppycakebakes.blogspot.com
  21. My 8 year old son who loves to cook found this recipe (yes he's very internet saavy). I "assisted" him in the kitchen while he did the rest!! He LOVED following picture by picture to make sure he was doing it right. Now, the anticipation of watching the clock and waiting until they are done! Thank you!
  22. I just made a batch of the peanut butter cups and they were fantastic. How long do you think the peanut butter and s'mores cups will keep? Do you think they need to be refrigerated? I want to make a large batch for our county fair, but I would like to make them ahead of time. Thanks for the great recipes and easy instructions.
  23. Hi, I tried these and it's true they are easy to make, but I couldn't "priy" the paper cups from the chocolate. Any suggestions?
    • Use the silicon peanut butter cup mold. It's great for cake pops too. They sell it on Amazon. Look for this: "Freshware 30-Cavity Silicone Chocolate, Candy and Peanut Butter Cup Mold". Cheers, Sarah
  24. I made the smores cups the other day and while they were really good, the chocolate was a lot to take in for me and my boyfriend. Is there anything that can be mixed with the chocolate while melting it to kind of dilute it a little?
  25. LOVE the photos. I'm going to use chunky peanut butter but I also love the idea of other fillings. I just bought some awesome Cherry Butter (like Apple Butter but cherry) that I might try.
    • p.s. Also being incredibly lazy I'm rolling the peanut butter ones into balls and dipping them in the chocolate. I've used plastic candy molds in years past but don't want to work that hard this year!
  26. I just wanted to thank you for putting together such a fabulous tutorial. You make a fantastic educator! Thank you very much! Your instructions were very precise and the photos were especially helpful, as well as the video on tempering. There is no possible way to go wrong under your instruction. Also, the candies turned out great! Good work!
  27. I am so making these! I am moving on from my failed peanut butter fudge days and going for the cup!!! Thank you and as always I enjoy your website, thank you for coming up with the idea and sharing it with us!
  28. Just finished making these. I made a half batch and got 2 dozen mini cups. I split the peanut butter mixture and added chipotle pepper to half of it, cause I like a little kick. I also made a few fluffernutter ones for the hubby. It was pretty easy to do, a little messy, but a lot of fun. I do feel the peanut butter mixture is much too sweet. I used half unsweetened peanut butter (Teddy) and half Jif. I think next time (and oh yes, there will be a next time!) I'll use all Teddy, and maybe add a little salt. In fact, I'm thinking a little more pepper, and maybe some crumbled bacon is in order for the next batch. Hmm, maybe dark chocolate and a banana slice (or a splash of banana liqueur). http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150160818243843.305447.764898842
  29. I made these and they were amazing! One thing though I want to try to use maybe butterfinger candy bar in my filling but I'm afraid to LOL can you give me any tips on how to work that in?
  30. You have some some fantastic peanut butter cup photos. I am going to try each of the variations and will let you know how they turn out. Have you tried peanut butter and nutella cups or peanut butter and jelly cups?
  31. These are delicious!! I am making these for a party I'm having at the end of the week. How should I store them until then?
  32. Delicious! I bought a fancy chocolate mold that makes chocolates like the ones you might get in a fancy box of chocolates, and I plan on making some for Christmas presents-my mom has already decided what she wants! Thanks so much for the recipe!
  33. I made a variety of flavors by being creative with the fillings. I made a trail mix variety one that was layered with peanut butter filling, raisins, almond butter, crushed walnuts, honey, whole almonds, and pumpkin seeds! Also, to avoid them being overly sweet from the chocolate I used a combination of 1 bag 60% cocoa chips with 1 bag hersheys special dark chips. I used natural peanut butter to make the filling, but that still turned out a little sweet for my taste. I will have to dilute that more next time, but this is a great way to make your own energy bars with the right filing choices :)
  34. I purchased some brain molds today, so I won't be using the actual cup...BUT I'm pretty sure the same technique will work! I've been searching the net for hours trying to find the prefect recipe for some peanutbutter-filled-chocolate goodness and I found it! This seems pretty easy too in comparison to other things I've read. I'm not scared anymore! I'll attempt to make chocolate brains filled with peanut butter! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
  35. These look amazing! Here come holiday gifts. Peanut butter cups. Peanut butter and jelly cups. S'mores cups. Marzipan cups. Nutella cups. Salted caramel cups. OMG endless possibilities!!!
  36. I have a small batch cooling right now. I also tried making a coconut filling. Since this is an experiment, I used 1/4 cup coconut flake, 1.5 tbl sweetened condensed milk, and 1/8 tsp almond extract. I tasted the filling dipped in the still melty dark chocolate and holy yummy!!! It's a little sweet, so next time I will use unsweetened coconut, but now I have so many more Christmas goody ideas!!! Thanks for the great recipe! Oh, and a little thing I found helpful: when lining the cups with chocolate in the first step, it's a LOT easier to put the paper cups in a muffin tin. It helps to support the whole cup at once and a little less messy!
  37. thanks so much for the recipe the pictures helped a lot. these were the coolest thing to make and they turned out PERFECT. lots of fun and a nice way to pass the time on an afternoon off work!
  38. I just finished making these they are amazing!!! Pretty easy to make too I'm assuming they should always be left in the fridge?? I would hate to clean that mess up!! Thank you for a delicious recipe!!!
  39. Thanks, this was entertaining(pictures) and informative. If you decide to make these as gifts, I wish to be a recipient. Thanks! Write for my address, thanks! Hey, great idea there to use graham crackers or marshmellow fluff! You can use graham BEARS too, then the fit on top will be so easy and the bumpy texture would be great. It may scare the bears though, to be burried under chocolate. Bears Rights!!!!! oh, and how about icecream AND peanut butter. Once I had peanut butter pie, wow, soooo good, this would be better than that with the "crust" being made from chocolate. Also, they sell mini graham shells, you can use those as the base for the smores but if you coat the inside with chocolate, it'll glue it together, which you basically need, they break extremely easily!!
